The palm leaf basket is made from the leaves of the date palm, which is abundant in Pakistan. The craft of making palm leaf basket has been handed down through generations of skilled craftsmen. The date palm leaves are usually harvested in the summer months when they are at their most resilient. The leaves are then sorted by size and quality and the best ones are selected for basket weaving.
The weaving process starts with the preparation of the palm leaves. They are first washed and then dried in the sun. Once dry, the leaves are cut into long, thin strips with a sharp knife. These strips are then soaked in water to make them more pliable.
The weaver takes a strip of palm leaf and weaves it around a central core. As more and more strips are added, the basket begins to take shape. The weaver must be very careful to maintain the proper tension in the strips so that the basket does not become too loose or too tight.
Some palm leaf baskets are decorated with simple geometric patterns, while others have more elaborate designs mainly depicting scenes from everyday life or nature. Some Pakistani basket makers draw inspiration from Navajo designs, as well as other American and Central and South American basket designs.
They are usually used to transport fruit, vegetables and other goods to the market. They are also popular as decorative objects, wall ornaments and are often used to hold flowers or other household items.
