Keleti Szőnyegek Galériája

In the early 1990s, at the invitation of a friend, we travelled to the Caucasus and spent 3 weeks visiting the major carpet-making cities of Dagestan and Azerbaijan. Contrary to the style of European interior design, the homes of the people living here were decorated primarily with hand-knotted Caucasian rugs and beautiful hand-woven kilims. The use of sumac carpets was also very widespread and there was hardly an apartment or house where you wouldn’t find a beautiful piece or two. Inspired by the trip, there was no question that from now on we would like to focus on the sale and purchase of oriental carpets.

At the beginning, we spent a lot of time learning professional skills such as. : in the library of the Museum of Applied Arts, touring the major museums, contacting carpet collectors to study the largest carpet collections in person.

In 1996 we established our business, the Gallery of Oriental Carpets, and opened our carpet gallery at 9 Váci Street. The gallery initially offered antique Caucasian, Anatolian, Persian, Turkmen and Afghan carpets. We spent our days looking for old pieces. For years, we cleaned our antique carpets ourselves, mastering the tricks to restore our antiques to their original condition. The ,,Iranyi ” street was once home to a long-established carpet restoration workshop. After the closing of the workshop, the excellent professionals who worked there helped us to restore our pieces.

Between 1996 and 2000 we exhibited our products at the Budapest International Fair.

In 2005 our gallery moved to a new location at 1056 Budapest Váci utca 52. Customer feedback and the emergence of a demand side required the continuous expansion of the product range, and as a result we started to sell unique new carpets and oriental handicraft products.
