History of the Hollóházi porcelain

The history of Hollóházi porcelain dates back more than two centuries and is closely intertwined with the development of the Hungarian crafts and ceramics industry. The factory was originally founded in 1777 in Hollóháza, at the foot of the Zemplén Hills, where the natural conditions – clay, wood and water – provided excellent conditions for ceramics production. Initially, the factory produced glass and stoneware, but the real golden age of the factory began when, in the mid-19th century, it switched to the production of finer, more sophisticated porcelain products.

In the 20th century, the Hollóházi Porcelain Factory became one of the leading players in the production of porcelain in Hungary. The manufactory’s products – especially from the 1950s onwards – were world-class and increasingly sought after not only at home but also abroad. During this period, the factory employed prominent Hungarian craftsmen, designers and sculptors, who produced many unique, hand-painted pieces of artistic value.

The Hollóházi porcelain is special not only because of its quality, but also because of the combination of Hungarian folk motifs and classical style. The porcelain figurines – be they animal figures, hunting scenes or female figures – have become truly valuable collector’s items due to their richness of detail and delicacy.

After the regime change, the factory underwent several transformations, but the Hollóházi name has retained its prestige and is still synonymous with high quality Hungarian porcelain. The meeting of traditional craft techniques and modern design continues to define the style of the factory.

Today, Hollóházi porcelain is not only a decorative object, but also an iconic representative of Hungarian culture and craftsmanship. The old pieces – especially the antique figurines, rare sets and uniquely painted vases – are now considered serious works of art and sought after by collectors.

The most notable Hollóházi designers were Ősz Szabó Antónia, Fazekas László, Csúcs Ferenc, Gáspár Imre, Török János, Dévényi Sándor, Nyitrai Lajos, Kéri Imre, Szász Endre
