The history of Herendi Porcelain Factory
In the gentle slopes of the Transdanubian hills, near Lake Balaton, in a small village called Herend, a special story began in the early 19th century. Back then, no one could have imagined that this tiny village would one day become a world-famous porcelain factory – a workshop that today is one of the most beautiful symbols of Hungarian craftsmanship, and whose name is forever intertwined with the concepts of elegance, tradition and perfection.
The first steps were taken by Vince Stingl, who opened a pottery workshop in Herend in 1826. He was the first to experiment with porcelain production in Hungary, but his business soon ran into financial difficulties. However, after the initial attempts, a new chapter began in 1839 when Mór Fischer took over the workshop and dreamed up something quite special.
Mór Fischer had not only technical knowledge but also excellent business sense. He recognised that a world far wider than the Hungarian market could be open to high quality, hand-painted, artistic porcelain. Thus began the rise of Herendi porcelain, which became not only a handcrafted product but also a work of art. The factory grew rapidly and within a few years it was known throughout Europe. At the 1851 World’s Fair in London, for example, Herendi porcelain was used to decorate the table of Queen Victoria of England – hence the famous ‘Victoria pattern’, which has been one of the most famous Herendi porcelain pieces ever since.
In the second half of the 19th century, Herendi won a succession of international awards, from Paris to Vienna. The imperial and royal courts became clients, the aristocracy favoured Herend’s elegance, and every piece was the result of meticulous handwork, decades of experience and the talent of Hungarian craftsmen.
But the history of the factory has not always been smooth. The First and Second World Wars and the years of communism brought difficult times. After nationalisation, Herendi Porcelain remained in state hands for a long time, but it still retained its special character. The artists and craftsmen carried on the traditions and developed new designs and forms – the factory was both a place where the past lived on and where contemporary beauty was born.
After the change of regime, the Herendi Porcelain Manufactory was reborn: it was privately owned again and continued on the path started by Mór Fischer. By the turn of the millennium, Herendi porcelain was no longer a relic of the past, but a living tradition: modern but deeply rooted; luxurious but handmade; Hungarian but recognised the world over.
Today, the Herendi Porcelain Manufactory employs hundreds of people, including painters, disc makers, glaziers and mould makers. Each piece – be it a tiny figurine, a teacup or an entire dinner service – is handmade, goes through dozens of processes and often takes months to complete. This careful attention and passion is what gives Herendi porcelain its true value.
The Herendi Museum in the factory also offers a glimpse into this special world. Visitors can admire the old moulds and patterns from different eras and see how these unique pieces are made. The museum is not just an exhibition space, but a journey through time: a witness to the glorious history of Hungarian craftsmanship.
Herendi porcelain is still a treasure in demand all over the world – in Asia, North America and the big cities of Europe. It can be found in royal palaces, diplomatic residences, luxury hotels and family homes. Its value, elegance and craftsmanship always ensure its place among the highest-ranking art and craft objects.
Herendi Porcelain is not just a business, it is a living heritage. It is a manufactory where respect for the past meets creativity of the present, where the spirit of Hungarian craftsmanship is in every brushstroke, and where every object tells a story – the story of the Hungarian soul.
